Charles Fort

Built in the 17th century, it is today the most important fortification in Ireland, designed as a star. It was captured by the Williamist troops in 1960. Subsequently, a barracks inside sheltered an English garrison until the liberation of Ireland in 1922. At the reception, as well as in the old residence of the governor, are related the history of the city and the forts.

all along the road leading to the fort, you can admire superb views of the bay. Opposite, on the peninsula Castlepark, dating from the same period and witnesses of the same events, James Fort, who also keeps the entrance of the port since 1607 and is equally impressive.
